Eagles split first two matches at MIT Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Edgewood College volleyball team introduced themselves to New England at the MIT Engineers Classic on Friday. The Eagles collected a dominating 3-0 win over Babson College, but then fell 3-0 to host MIT in their second match of the day. The Eagles have two more matches on Saturday before returning home.

In the opening match Edgewood College (2-4) seized control early over the Beavers and cruised to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-13 victory. Elizabeth Evans led the Eagles' offensive attack with eight kills and a .389 hitting percentage. Jordan Winkler matches Evans' kill output with eight of her own and earned a double-double with 17 digs. Rachel Tesch collected a team-high 24 digs. Jenna Dammen anchored the front row with five total blocks including two solo efforts. Haley Schwenn and Alex Zapuchlak each had 13 assists. Edgewood College hit .142 for the match including a .241 mark in the final set.

After MIT (6-1) controlled the first set, the Eagles lost a marathon second set in a 25-16, 30-28, 25-17 defeat. Emily Chaussee tallied nine kills, while Evans and Winkler scored seven kills apiece. Tesch notched a season-high 31 digs, while Zapuchlak totaled 17 assists. Edgewood College hit .250 in the second set and finished the match with a .183 attack percentage.

Edgewood College will be back in action tomorrow with matches against Brandeis University and Wellesley College on the campus of MIT.
