Maroons slip past Eagles in final home game

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team wrapped up the regular season on Monday night with a 5-3 loss to the University of Chicago at Stampfl Field. The allowed two unearned runs and eight walks in suffering their fourth loss in a row. Edgewood College will open the NACC Tournament on Thursday as the third seed, against Concordia University Wisconsin.

The University of Chicago (18-17) scored two unearned runs in the third inning off Eagles starter Blake Bieri and picked up another run in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. Edgewood College (18-22) finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Pat Manning laid down a perfect squeeze bunt which died sitting on the third base line, allowing Brodie Engel to score from third.

The Eagles scored again in the sixth inning when Engel singled up the middle to bring Alex Fowler home. The Maroons scored two runs in the eighth to regain a three-run advantage at 5-2. In the bottom of the eighth, the Eagles put their first two runners on base, but only scored one run on another Engel single up the middle.

Engel was the Eagles' leading hitter, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Fowler also went 2-for-3. Brad Clark and Danny Appino were both 2-for-5 with Clark adding a double in the seventh inning. Manning's single extended his streak of reaching base safely to 31 consecutive games, tying Zack Creekmore's school record set earlier this year.

Bieri pitched five innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits, but gave up five bases on balls. Alex Meister pitched two scoreless innings, before AJ Verhage finished the game, allowing two runs on three hits.
