MEQUON, Wis. – A few lost early opportunities and too many free bases added up to an Edgewood College loss in the opening game of the NACC Baseball Tournament at Kapco Park. Concordia University Wisconsin hit two home runs to take an 8-5 victory from the Eagles. Edgewood College will now face top seep Concordia University Chicago at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night, facing elimination.
Concordia University Wisconsin (23-17) scored an unearned run in the second on a pair of Eagle errors to grab an early lead. The Falcons added two more in the third before Edgewood College (18-23) tallied their first run of the day. Zack Creekmore drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a Brad Clark single. Nick Lehner then hit a bloop single over the CUW shortstop's head to score Creekmore, running all the way.
CUW's Mitchell Dubnicka opened the sixth inning with a solo home run and things began to go south for Edgewood College starter Steve Gavin. The Falcons added two more runs in the sixth and Dubnicka homered again in the seventh for a 7-1 lead which the Falcons extended to 8-1 later in the seventh.
The Eagles got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the eighth when Danny Appino launched a ball into the right center field gap to score Alex Fowler and Peter Hefty who had singled to open the inning. Things got really interesting in the ninth inning when Creekmore walked and Clark singled, allowing Lehner to drive them in with a double to left center to make the score 8-5. However, CUW's Josh Ruppel retired the final three Eagles hitter to secure the victory for the Falcons.
The Eagles were led by Lehner who went 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Clark was 3-for-5 and Hefty went 2-for-5. Appino had his double for two runs batted in. Gavin went 5.2 innings, allowing five earned runs and five bases on balls to fall to 4-3 on the season. AJ Weedon, Alex Meister and Elijah Roche finished the game for the Eagles.
Edgewood College will face number one seed Concordia University Chicago in a Thursday night game at 7:00 p.m. The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Aurora University 5-4 in the tournament's opening game.
