ASHWAUBENON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's tennis team snapped a five-match losing streak heading into their final tests before a spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. The Eagles toppled Ripon College 7-2 in Saturday's morning match at the Green Bay Tennis Center before falling to Adrian College 9-0 at midday.
The Eagles stormed out of the gates by sweeping all three doubles matches from Ripon College (0-9) in convincing fashion. Edgewood College (2-6) earned an 8-0 shutout from Evan Stone and Michael Wanta at No. 2 doubles. In singles play, freshmen Jaime Benavides and Nick Konen each earned his first singles victory of their career. Benavides defeated Anders Goodwin 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, while Konen dispatched Pheng Vang 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Brandon Glock served a 6-0, 6-0 double bagel at Nick Julian in the No. 5 singles match, while Stone claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over the Red Hawks Lincoln Wurtz.
The second match of the day against the Bulldogs of Adrian College (9-2) was a little rougher for the Eagles. Edgewood College put up a strong fight in doubles play, but ultimately lost all three matches. Stone and Wanta forced a tiebreaker at 8-8 before losing a 9-8 (7-4) decision. In the singles matches, Austin Papenthien battled back to win the second set, but lost a narrow 11-9 decision in the match tiebreaker to fall 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 at No. 1 singles to Adrian's Brandon Brom. Stone forced a first set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles, but fell to Jeff Sophiea 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.
Edgewood College's next matches will be within a topspin lob of the Atlantic Ocean. The Eagles will travel to Hilton Head, S.C. for a set of six dual matches, starting with St. Mary's College (Md.) and Ramapo College on March 15. When the Eagles return from South Carolina, their attention will turn to the NACC season which begins on March 28.
