HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Edgewood College women's tennis team introduced themselves back to Hilton Head on Monday in their first spring trip competitions. The Eagles were shutout by Allegheny 9-0 in an early morning match, but bounced back to defeat McDaniel College 7-2 in the afternoon.
Edgewood College (11-6) could gain no traction against Allegheny College (3-3) in the first match of the day. The Gators won all three doubles matches by identical 8-3 scores, and then took the singles matches, each of them in straight sets. Anna Miles had the closest singles match, falling to Mikaela Pope 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 2 position.
Things got better for the Eagles in the day's second match against McDaniel College (2-3). Edgewood College swept through doubles play 3-0. In singles action, Morgan Wilson rallied from a set behind to pull out a 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 victory at No. 1 singles over McDaniel College's Maddy Simmons. Molly Protz scored a dominating 6-1, 6-1 win over the Green Terror's Dana Waskiewicz at No. 5 singles. The win snapped a season-long three-match losing streak for the Eagles.
Edgewood College's Tuesday match against Greenville College has been cancelled, so the Eagles will look forward to two matches on Wednesday. Edgewood College will meet FDU-Florham (N.J.) in an early morning match, and then face in-state opponent UW-Stevens Point in the evening.
