MIDDLETON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's tennis team continued to challenge themselves with a difficult non-conference schedule. The Eagles hosted their first home matches of the season, falling to UW-La Crosse 9-0 and Carthage College 8-1 at Hitters Sportsplex. Patrick Lagman earned the Eagles only win on Saturday evening.
UW-La Crosse (4-2) handed the Eagles their first shutout of the season with a dominating performance. Edgewood College's Evan Stone and Michael Wanta had the closest doubles match falling 8-3 to Kelly McGrane and Matt Lindsay at No. 2 doubles. In singles play, no Eagle other than Stone won more than three games against their UW-La Crosse counterparts. Stone fell 6-1, 6-4 to UWL's Nick Skanavis at No. 4 singles.
Edgewood College (1-4) fared much better in the late night match with Carthage College (2-2). Brian Davenport and Jaime Benavides pushed UWL's Alex Feruzzi and Conor Moon to the limit before falling 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. The Eagles finally broke through for a point at No. 2 singles. Lagman dropped the first set to Jordan Verbauwhede 5-7, before rallying to win the second set 6-2 and then claiming a 10-3 win in the match tiebreaker. Lagman improved to 4-3 in singles play on the season.
Edgewood College will have 10 days off before their next match. The Eagles will travel to Janesville on February 24 to meet UW-Whitewater.
