Eagles rally for three in eighth to top Sabres

VERONA, Wis. – Edgewood College scored three runs without a hit in the eighth inning for a strange 5-4 come from behind victory over Marian University in game one of their NACC doubleheader. Marian's Brandon Winfield blanked the Eagles 5-0 in game two to salvage a split in the Eagles first home games of 2014.

Trailing 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Edgewood College (5-12, 1-1 NACC) pieced together a bizarre rally. After walks to Andrew Lauritzen and Danny Appino to start the inning, Alex Jaskulski attempted to sacrifice his teammates over, but the throw from Marian pitcher Sam Forkert forced first baseman Chad Langley toward the baseline and into a huge collision with Jaskulski. The ball came loose, allowing Lauritzen to score from third base. Langley was forced to leave the game after the play.

Ryan O'Dell then brought home Appino with an RBI ground ball to tie the game. With two outs and Jaskulski on third base, Brad Clark hit a short chopper to the left of the mound. Forkert picked it up, but rather than get the third out at first base, he attempted to cut down Jaskulski at home. The throw went wild, allowing Jaskulski to score the go-ahead run. In the ninth inning Marian University (9-7, 4-2 NACC) put runner at second and third with two outs, but the Eagles Trevor Koehn coaxed a fly ball from Marian pinch hitter Casey Schreiner for his first career save.

Talyor Hillmann went seven innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits before yielding to AJ Verhage who picked up the win in relief. Clark went 2-for-4 with a triple to account for half of the Eagles hits in game one. O'Dell had an RBI double in the first inning to score Jaskulski with the Eagles' first run of the game.

In game two, the Eagles never solved Winfield who only struck out two, but spread out nine hits over nine innings for his third win of the season. Edgewood College put their first two men on base in both the second and third innings and also left two runners on base in the sixth inning. Starting pitcher Andy Swanson was strong through six innings, before Marian touched him for two runs in the seventh inning. Swanson struck six batters in 6.1 innings. Lauritzen, Jaskulski and Zack Creekmore each had two singles to lead the Eagles offense.

Edgewood College will be back in action tomorrow with a non-conference doubleheader at Ripon College. The Eagles will return home next Thursday for a rescheduled doubleheader with MSOE at Stampfl Field.
