Box Score VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team won their fifth home game in a row , their longest streak since 2010 in a 12-2 pasting of Maranatha Baptist University on Thursday at Stampfl Field. Freshman Blake Bieri didn't give up an earned run for his first career win and first career complete game, while Ryan O'Dell and Zack Creekmore both homered for the Eagles.
O'Dell got Edgewood College (11-17) off to great start with a two-run home run in the second inning. His second home run of the season and 10th of his career made him just the fifth Eagle ever to hit at least 10 home runs. In the fourth inning, the Eagles took advantage of some shaky Crusaders defense to plate five runs and blow the game open. Mitch Marty had the big hit with a two-run single that actually scored a third run when Maranatha's cutoff throw went wild for a 7-0 lead.
Peter Hefty picked up a two-run single of his own in the fifth inning, and then scored on a wild pitch to push the Eagles advantage to 10-0. Maranatha Baptist (3-12) responded with two runs in the sixth, but Creekmore's first career home run in the bottom of the sixth pushed the Eagles lead back to 12-2. Bieri worked around a seventh inning single to close out his first collegiate win. Bieri allowed seven hits and struck out two Crusaders on the day.
O'Dell ended up with a season-high three hits including his home run and four runs scored. Creekmore went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and threw out a runner at the plate from left field in the fourth inning.
Edgewood College heads into an important weekend, playing doubleheaders against the teams located directly ahead of and directly behind them in the standings. The Eagles will play two games at Benedictine on Saturday and then return home for a doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran College on Monday.
