Box Score 2 VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team pulled out a strong offense performance to complement their strong starting pitching in a NACC doubleheader sweep of MSOE. Behind a complete game from Taylor Hillmann, the Eagles topped the Raiders 9-3 in the opening game and then pounded out 16 hits in the nightcap for a 9-7 win.
In the day's first game, MSOE (8-10, 4-4 NACC) had grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a home run by David Miklosi, but the Eagles responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Walks to Marc Ostrowski and Nate Averill set the table for a big inning. Danny Appino beat out a bunt for a single and the throw to first sailed high allowing Ostrowski to score. Andrew Lauritzen then squeezed a single through the left side, scoring Appino and Averill. After an Alex Jaskulski single, Sean Thompson, Brad Clark and Averill all delivered RBI singles to put the Eagles ahead 7-2.
The Eagles picked up an unearned run in the sixth when Lauritzen scored on Thompson's mishandled ground ball. Edgewood College (8-15, 4-2 NACC) made it nine when Lauritzen knocked an RBI single to score Ostrowski in the seventh.
Hillmann pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits and giving up just two earned runs. He struck out four batters and didn't walk any in 130 pitches. Lauritzen went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs as every Eagle in the lineup had at least one hit. Ostrowski was 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored, while Appino was 2-for-3. Jaskulkski had one hit, which gave him 171 for his career moving him into second place all-time on the Edgewood College record list for career hits.
In game two, the Eagles had an answer for every run the Raiders put up. Averill pushed home Ryan O'Dell with a sacrifice fly and Averill drove in Clark for a 2-0 Eagles lead in the second. In the third Clark laid down a perfect bunt to score Thompson from third base and Will Schlosser contributed a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 Eagles lead.
Edgewood College was leading 6-4 and looking for insurance runs in the fifth inning. After two quick outs, the Eagles loaded the bases for pinch hitter Jacob Yellovich. Yellovich popped a single into left center to score two runs. Jaskulski followed with an RBI single in the next at bat for a 9-4 Edgewood College lead.
It turned out to be runs the Eagles would need as MSOE's Wes Stasik hit a three-run home run in the eighth to pull the Raiders back to 9-7. However, freshman Bryce Ziegler came on to get the final two outs of the eighth and all three in the ninth to earn his first career save. Starter Andy Swanson claimed his first victory of the season, pitching six innings and allowing just one earned run with three strikeouts.
The two wins pushed the Eagles into the top half of the NACC standings heading into a big four-game weekend. Edgewood College will travel to fifth-ranked Concordia University Chicago on Saturday, and then return home to play Dominican University on Sunday.
