Extra inning rally earns split for Eagles

Zack Creekmore
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Edgewood College baseball team finally reached the sunny ball fields of Fort Myers, Fla. and started their Gene Cusic Classic run with a doubleheader split with Haverford College (Pa.). The Fords claimed the first game 7-3, while the Eagles went extra innings for a win by the same score in game two.

After four scoreless innings in game two, the Eagles and Fords traded matching numbers in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Edgewood College loaded the bases with two outs for Nick Lehner. The freshman delivered a clutch two-run single up the middle to put the Eagles on the board first. In the sixth inning, Sean Thompson singled home Alex Jaskulski for a 3-2 lead, but a leadoff home run by Haverford's Justin Coulter in the bottom of the inning tied the game again.

The seven-inning game went to the eighth, where the Eagles blew it open. Ryan O'Dell ended up on second base after a dropped fly ball to open the door on a four run inning, with all runs scoring after two men were out. Zack Creekmore, Andrew Lauritzen and Mitch Marty all rapped RBI singles in the eighth. AJ Verhage who had entered the game in the sixth inning hung around to pick up the victory in relief of starter Andy Swanson.

Ryan Busse took the loss on the mound in game one for the Eagles, but certainly through no fault of his own. Busse pitched four innings, giving up just two hits and no earned runs while striking out two batters. The Fords only run against Busse came when William Bannard scored from first following a single by Casey Fox and an outfield error. Each Eagle pitcher gave up just one earned run.

Edgewood College (2-1) picked up two unearned runs in the fifth inning which cut the Fords lead to 3-2. Jaskulski plated two runs when an errant throw from Haverford pitcher Tommy Bergjans allowed Marty and Lauritzen to score. However, Haverford College (1-1) tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead. Jaskulski drove in the Eagles final run with a single in the seventh the scored Danny Appino.

Creekmore went 1-for-1 but reached base three times thanks to a pair of bases on balls. Catcher Thompson was 1-for-2 and threw out a pair of Haverford base stealers.

The win gave head coach Al Brisack his 299th career victory. He and the Eagles will go for No. 300 on Monday in a doubleheader against Gettysburg College. The Eagles and Bullets begin at 10:00 a.m. eastern time.
