Eagles score first, but fall to Panthers

Zack Creekmore
Box Score KENOSHA, Wis. – With temperatures under 40 degrees, anyone watching could have guessed that both teams would have a hard time warming up but the Edgewood College baseball team pushed a run across early. Despite the 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Eagles failed to score again and fell 4-1 to UW-Milwaukee.

After a 1-2-3 first inning, Ryan O'Dell singled in the top of the second for Edgewood College's first runner of the day. The senior advanced to second on a passed ball before Zack Creekmore put runners at the corners with a single to left. Brad Clark followed with a sacrifice fly to left, plating O'Dell and giving the Eagles an early 1-0 advantage.

Edgewood College kept UW-Milwaukee (4-11) on their toes, using a different pitcher in every inning. Five different hurlers cruised through the Panthers and gave up just one hit until UW-Milwaukee rallied in the sixth. Ryan McShane drew a walk to start the inning and scored after an Eagles' throwing error. A sacrifice fly scored another for a 2-1 lead, but Verhage ended the threat with two popups.

Clark connected for a two-out single in the seventh but Sean Thompson grounded out to end the inning. Nate Averill struck out the second batter he faced in UW-Milwaukee's half of the inning but then Ryan Solberg hit the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a 4-1 Panthers' lead. The Eagles had two more innings to rally back but only one runner reached base in the final two frames.

Andy Swanson and Brock McGinn each tallied a strikeout in their scoreless frame. Despite giving up the home run, Averill notched two strikeouts in the seventh with just 12 pitches. Hoppel then used just 11 pitches to down UW-Milwaukee in the eighth. Creekmore collected two of Edgewood College's four hits while O'Dell and Clark recorded the others.

Mother Nature willing, Edgewood College will open the conference season at home this Saturday with a 12:00 pm doubleheader against MSOE. Live stats and video will be provided from Stampfl Field in Verona.
