Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. - It was another frustrating day in the Florida sun for the Edgewood College baseball team. The Eagles led both games against UMass Boston heading into the final inning, but lost both of them. The Beacons scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 win in the opener, before pulling out a 2-1 victory over the Eagles in 10 innings in game two. Four of the Eagles' six losses in Florida have been by a single run.
UMass Boston (2-0) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first of game one on a pair of unearned runs. Todd Ezold had an RBI single in that inning and that was the only hit allowed by Eagles starter Ryan Busse for the first six innings. Busse was masterful, setting down 11 Beacons in a row at one point and striking out four batters on the day.
Edgewood College (3-6) generated some run support for Busse in the sixth inning via the bunt. Alex Jaskulski and Danny Appino advanced Andrew Lauritzen with a pair of bunt singles, and Marc Ostrowski brought Lauritzen home with another bunt that was misplayed by the Beacons. Zack Creekmore than delivered the big blow with a double to left center field that scored Jaskulski and Appino to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
However in the bottom of the seventh, UMass Boston finally solved Busse. The Beacons loaded the bases with one out on a double by Anthony Gomes-Sirianni, a walk, a double steal and an intentional walk. Gomes came in tie the game on a Busse wild pitch. After another intentional walk, Nate Averill relieved Busse, but walked pinch hitter Brian Dupre to force in the winning run.
No Eagle had more than one hit in the game, with Creekmore leading the way with his two-run double. Â Ostrowski was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sean Thompson hit a leadoff double in the third inning. Busse was outstanding, going 6.1 innings and allowing just two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Game two was another pitchers' duel with Edgewood College's Andy Swanson battling UMass Boston's Lucas Ilges. The Eagles didn't put one on the board against Ilges until the fifth inning. Brad Clark led off with a double to right center field. Two batters later Lauritzen drove him home with an RBI single.
Swanson meanwhile gave up four hits over his first three innings, but then retired 11 straight Beacon batters. UMass Boston finally scraped out a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by pinch hitter Charles LaPaglia. Neither team generated another serious threat until the 10th inning. Nick Brothers led off for the Beacons with a triple off Eagle reliever AJ Verhage. Gomes-Sirianni then drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center field for the eventual game-winning run. The Eagles put a runner on second with one out in the 10th, but couldn't score the equalizer.
Lauritzen had two hits in five at-bats and a stolen base for Edgewood College. Nick Lehner and Creekmore each went 1-for-3 and Brad Clark had a double. Swanson threw 8.1 innings, scattering eight hits and giving up just the one run. Bryce Ziegler finished off the ninth inning in relief of Swanson.
Edgewood College will play their final games at the Gene Cusic Classic tomorrow with neighboring state rival Bethel University (Minn.). The Eagles and Royals will get underway Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
