Eagles lock down NACC berth with win at MSOE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The train keeps rolling along for the Edgewood College volleyball team. The Eagles won their seventh consecutive match by defeating MSOE 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20) on Wednesday night at the Kern Center. With the victory, Edgewood College secures a berth in the six-team NACC Tournament.

Junior Jordan Winkler came out on fire for Edgewood College (18-11, 8-2 NACC) scoring five kills in the opening set. The Eagles were actually tied with the Raiders at 14-14, before a kill by Savannah Koester launched a 10-0 Eagles run. Macalah Finstad served nine consecutive points, before MSOE broke the streak on the Eagles first attempt at set point.

MSOE (10-14, 4-6 NACC) won a close 25-23 victory in the second set, but Edgewood College turned up the heat in set three. Led by five kills from Koester and four kills for Elizabeth Evans the Eagles hit .303 in the third set and claimed a 25-18 win.

For an encore, Edgewood College hit even better in the fourth set, attacking at a .318 clip. The Eagles trailed 16-15, but aided by an assisted block from Evans and Sarah Schuchhardt, followed by a solo block from Schuchhardt on consecutive plays, Edgewood College grabbed a 19-16 lead and hung on to the end.

Koester finished with 14 kills, narrowly edging out Winkler's 13 kills for match honors. Schuchhardt had an outstanding match, scoring nine kills against only one error and adding in five blocks. Evans and Renee Meister each had eight kills apiece. Rachel Thomsen delivered 27 assists to lead the team, while Rachel Tesch scored 24 digs from the back row.

With the win, the Eagles likely secure the third seed for the NACC Tournament which begins on November 4. If Edgewood College remains in that position, they will host an NACC Tournament first round match On November 4 against the NACC's sixth seeded team.
