Dailey pushes Eagles past Cardinals

Jennifer Dailey
Box Score MADISON, Wis. – After two road losses, the Edgewood College women's soccer team could honestly say it felt good to be home sweet home. The Eagles picked up their first win of the season 1-0 over St. Mary's University behind Jennifer Dailey's first half goal.

Offense was rather scarce in the first half with only three shots combined between the teams. All three shots came on Edgewood College's part and the Eagles were on point with those attempts. The first two shots were on goal, but saved by the Cardinals' Aubrie Cornell. In the 16th minute, Dailey had her chance in the box as she dribbled in, touched the ball back to fake a defender, and ripped a shot in the back of the net, just out of Cornell's reach. The rest of the half was pretty quiet with no more shot attempts.

After the break, the Eagles continued to control the pace of the game, holding a 7-1 shot advantage over St. Mary's University (0-4). At the 62:52 mark in the second half, the Cardinals registered their first and only shot, but Tori Fortney was right there to snag it, preserving the shutout. Edgewood College also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, but could not convert any of the set pieces.

Dailey scored her goal on two total shots, while Emily Berns fired three shots, with two on the net. Katie Pampuch and Hailey Boyle also accounted for two shots each. With the 1-0 victory, Fortney collected her third career shutout.

The win gave Coach Tim Alexander 497 total men's and women's victories. With three more, Coach Alexander can become just the 17th in NCAA history to reach the 500 win mark.

Edgewood College will be back on the road this weekend as the Eagles travel to Beloit College on Friday. The non-conference match will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Strong Complex in Beloit.
