OSHKOSH, Wis. – The hot streak continued for the Edgewood College women's volleyball team on Wednesday night as the Eagles traveled to Oshkosh for a triangular. Edgewood College swept UW-Oshkosh 3-0, their first win against the Titans in 13 tries, and then downed the University of Dubuque 3-0 to extend their winning streak to three.
On just one day of practice from their opening season tournament, Edgewood College (5-1) came out hot against UW-Oshkosh. The Eagles jumped out to a 10-3 lead in set one before the Titans rallied back behind an attack percentage of .306 to cut Edgewood College's lead to 22-20. The Eagles did not back down though, and took the first set 25-22. Just as they started hot in set one, Edgewood College ended with a bang in set two on an 11-4 run to cruise to a 25-18 victory. In the second set alone, the Eagles had 20 kills with just two errors. In the final frame, Edgewood College only hit .059 with nine kills and seven errors, but won 26-24 thanks to 10 errors and a -.069 attack percentage from UW-Oshkosh (1-4).
Katie Wedvick only had 11 attack attempts, but made them count, pounding home eight kills without an error. Senior Jessica Martin led the way with 11 kills while Sarah Schuchhardt and Jordan Winkler had a combined 15 kills and just three errors. Lindsey Swansby had 25 assists in the winning effort while Sam Himmelspach was all over the floor with 17 digs.
Fueled from the win, it seemed as whoever took the floor next against Edgewood College would be in trouble. The University of Dubuque (3-2) just happened to be that team. Winkler served the Eagles to a 7-0 start in set one behind a pair of aces and Edgewood College never looked back. Behind 20-9, the Spartans began to rally, but were in too deep and the Eagles took the first 25-19. Set two was even more in favor of Edgewood College as they cruised to a 25-14 victory. Whatever was said in the huddle sparked something for the University of Dubuque and the Spartans put up a fight in the third. After trailing early, the Eagles fought back before the two teams traded points back and forth. Toying with forcing a fourth set, the Spartans had a one point lead on Edgewood College. The Eagles were not having it though as they tallied three straight points to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.
Schuchhardt earned team honors with nine kills while Martin followed with seven. Wedvick pounded home four more kills without an error. Swansby racked up 18 more assists and Rachel Thomsen tallied 11 digs.
This weekend will really test Edgewood College as the Eagles head south for the UW-Platteville Invitational. Edgewood College will face Grinnell College and St. Norbert College on Friday before taking on Carroll University and Millikin University on Saturday.
