EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – For the second time this year, the Edgewood College men's team fired a two-round total of 607, but this past tournament that score gave the Eagles their best finish of the year. Edgewood College placed second of 14 at the UW-Eau Claire Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational behind two top ten finishes from
Kenny Rucker and
Michael Mathwick.
The Eagles showed consistency at the Eau Claire Country Club, firing a 301 on Sunday which was followed by Monday's round of 306. Senior Mathwick tied his season-low round of 73 during round one to lead the Eagles. Right on his heels was
Patrick Cahill with a 75. Rucker and
Patrick Bohrer rounded out Edgewood College's top four with scores of 76 and 77, respectively. After an impressive showing on Sunday, the Eagles had their eyes on top of the leaderboard, as Edgewood College trailed host school UW-Eau Claire by just two strokes.
Rucker continued his strong play as he dropped three shots from his first round score, turning in a 73 to finish tied for fourth. Mathwick fired an eight-over par 77 to tie for sixth in the field of 83 golfers. Bohrer and Cahill ended up tying for 30th with two day scores of 156. Sophomore Kyle Bruce posted a 157 while senior Tyler Cobb participated as an individual and finished with a two day total of 163.
The Eagles were just 11 shots from UW-Eau Claire who posted two sub-300 rounds of 299 and 297 to take their own tournament. Andrew Peter from Luther College earned medalist honors with an even par 142.
Edgewood College will test their play against conference opponents next weekend as they head to Hartford, Wisconsin to compete in the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational. The two day tournament will begin next Sunday at 10:15 a.m. from Washington County Golf Course.
