PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team took care of their business in their regular season finale, but the Eagles will still miss out on the postseason. Edgewood College swept past Lakeland College 8-0 and 19-6, but couldn't get any help to gain one of the six NAC Tournament berths. The Eagles finished in a tie for sixth place with Marian University and Wisconsin Lutheran College, but the tiebreaker went it favor of the Warriors.
Edgewood College (14-25, 11-11 NAC) game one starting pitcher Trevor Koehn was lights out for the Eagles. Koehn surrendered just two hits through the first six innings to the Muskies. He ended up with his second career complete game shutout. Koehn gave up just seven hits and struck out two batters. Koehn ends the season with a 3-4 record and a team-best 3.00 earned run average.
The Eagles got all the runs they would need for the game in the first two batters of the game. After Zack Creekmore walked, Brad Clark doubled to right center field to score him all the way from first base. Later Alex Jaskulski drove in Clark with a ground ball and then scored on a Muskie throwing error for a 3-0 first inning lead.
In the second inning, another Lakeland error opened the door for four Edgewood College unearned runs. Jaskulski delivered the big hit with a two-run double to left field. The Eagles scored their final run of the game in the third when Sean Thompson singled and eventually scored on double play ground ball.
Clark notched his second four-hit game of the season, going 4-for-6 with a double. Jaskluski and Andrew Lauritzen both went 3-for-5 with a double, with Jaskulski adding a team-high three runs batted in. Thompson ended with two hits of his own.
In the second game, Lakeland College (10-23, 6-16) struggled in the field with eight errors, leading to six unearned Eagle runs in a 19-6 Edgewood College victory. The Eagles already held an 8-4 lead when they scored seven runs on six hits and three Muskie errors in the sixth inning. Ryan O'Dell had a two-run double, while Thompson lashed a two-run single through the left side on the infield. At that point, Edgewood College held a 15-4 lead and the game was on cruise control.
Nate Averill earned his third win of the season, going six full innings. He struck out three Muskies while allowing five earned runs on nine hits. Brock McGinn pitched the seventh inning to finish off the game and the season.
At the plate, Jaskulski established a new career-high with five hits in six at-bats. His 8-for-11 day raised his season batting average to a team-high .411. His 65 base hits on the year is the third highest total in school history behind Jimy Landwehr (80 hits in 2010) and Travis Krahn (69 hits in 2004). Thompson and O'Dell both went a perfect 3-for-3 with Thompson driving in three runs and O'Dell two. Clark had two hits, including a triple and a team-high four runs batted in.
The doubleheader sweep marked the end of the careers of seniors Tony Ales, Brandon Bartels, Eric Curtis, Otto Muehlenberg and Jake Zadra. This group of seniors compiled 78 wins in their four-year careers.
