PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team was due to take out some of their frustrations from their recent losing streak. Unfortunately for UW-Platteville, the Pioneers were standing in the way. The Eagles scored six runs in the first inning, and received a rare inside-the-park grand slam home run from Marc Ostrowski in an 18-6 pasting of the Pioneers.
Edgewood College (12-23) jumped all over the Pioneers in the first inning at Kendall Murray Field, scoring six runs, in part thanks to two UW-Platteville errors. Sean Thompson provided a two-run single, while Pat Manning also pushed home a run with an RBI single. Andrew Lauritzen walked with the bases loaded and Ryan O'Dell had a sacrifice fly in the inning.
UW-Platteville (10-24) answered with two runs off Eagle starting pitcher Andrew Swanson in the bottom of the first. However, Thompson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Otto Muehlenberg drove in Ostrowski with a sacrifice fly to put Edgewood College back in front 8-2 after two innings.
The Eagles still lead 8-3 in the fifth inning when Ostrowski made his mad dash around the bases. A double by Alex Jaskulski plated one run and a walk to O'Dell loaded the bases with two outs. Ostrowski blasted a shot to the center field fence to clear the bases, and record his second home run of the season. The rare inside-the-park, grand slam gave the Eagles a commanding 13-3 lead.
UW-Plattville scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but the Eagles made no doubt about the outcome with three more runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. Muehlenberg had an RBI single in each of those innings, while Aaron Schmidt had a run scoring single in the ninth and Cody Digre recorded a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Swanson went six strong innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits while striking out four Pioneer hitters. Tony Ales struck out three in two innings of work and Cody Pfeifer finished off the ninth inning without allowing a hit.
Schmidt finished the game with a season-high three hits to lead the team. Ostrowski went 2-for-4 with his four runs batted in coming all at once. Muehlenberg doubled his season RBI total with three runs batted in on a 2-for-4 day. Jaskulski stroked his 10th and 11th doubles of the season for his two hits, while Nate Averill also had a pair of singles.
Edgewood College will conclude their home schedule on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Stampfl Field in Verona. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. and can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
