VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team got a great pitching performance from Trevor Koehn in the first game and four doubles from Ryan O'Dell on the day, but still settled for a split against Dominican University on Saturday. Behind Koehn's first career shutout, the Eagles dominated the Stars 6-0 in game one, but made a few too many mistakes in game two and fell 5-4.
Koehn picked up four strikeouts in the first three innings to serve notice he was on his game today. He only ran into trouble in one inning. In the fourth, Dominican University (9-21, 4-10 NAC) loaded the bases with nobody out, but Koehn recorded an infield pop-up, a force out at home, and then struck out Stars' Adam Quinn to end the threat. From the last out of the sixth to the ninth inning, Koehn retired 12 straight batters before a Tim Varallo single ended the streak. Koehn struck out seven and walked only one for his first win of the season.
Meanwhile, Edgewood College (8-16, 6-4 NAC) was pressing the Stars into some shaky defensive plays. After Marc Ostrowski pushed across an unearned run in the first with an RBI single, the Eagles tallied three more unearned runs in the fourth inning. Andrew Lauritzen brought Zach Creekmore home with a perfectly placed bunt single, and then Alex Jaskulski's grounder went through the legs of the Stars third baseman to score two more.
Edgewood College scored two more in the eighth on another RBI single from Lauritzen and an O'Dell double. O'Dell, Lauritzen, Jaskulski and Ostrowski all went 2-for-5 in the game, while Creekmore went 2-for-4. O'Dell had a pair of doubles, while Jaskulski had one.
Dominican gained the early advantage in the second game, scoring twice in the second inning. The Eagles would tie the game three separate times, but could never gain the lead. Edgewood College first tied the game in the fifth inning with two unearned runs thanks to two errors on the Stars.
Dominican struck back with a run on no hits in the sixth, but Edgewood College tied the game again on back-to-back doubles from O'Dell and Ostrowski. In the eighth, the Eagles again trailed 4-3, but managed to even the score on a booming O'Dell RBI double. Unfortunately, Dominican scored the eventual game winning run in the top of the ninth on a hit batter, two walks and a sacrifice fly from Adam Quinn.
O'Dell again had two doubles to lead the Eagles' offense. The junior designated hitter has now reached base in 20 straight games, in pursuit of the school record of 26 held jointly by Shawn Burcum (2006) and new Edgewood College Athletic Hall of Fame member Travis Krahn (2004). Brad Clark also had two hits in the game.
The Eagles allowed just three hits to the Stars in the second game, but Edgewood College pitchers walked five and plunked seven batters. Nate Averill, who entered the game in the fifth inning in relief of starter Dan Hoppel and Aaron Schmidt took the loss.
Edgewood College hits the road for a Sunday doubleheader against MSOE. The Eagles are currently in a fourth place tie with Marian in the Northern Athletics Conference standings. The top six teams will qualify for the NAC Tournament.
