FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Edgewood College baseball team had two chances to knock off an undefeated Haverford College team on Friday afternoon, but the Fords turned away the Eagles each time. Edgewood College dropped their fifth and sixth straight game, falling 9-3 in the opener and losing 5-4 in extra innings in the finale. Four of the Eagles' six losses in that stretch have been by just a single run.

In the first game, Edgewood College (2-10) answered a two-run first inning from Haverford with a run in the bottom of the first. Ryan O'Dell stroked a two-out double which scored Jake Zadra all the way from first base. The Eagles added another run in the third on another RBI double, this one from Zadra himself, which scored Andrew Lauritzen who had singled to get on base. However, by that time the Fords has added two more runs and led 4-2.

It was 6-2 in the fifth inning when Edgewood College scored another single run. Zadra singled for his third hit of the game which again scored Lauritzen from second base. Haverford College (9-0) built a 9-3 lead by the final inning and the Eagles were stymied by Fords pitcher Tommy Bergjans who struck out 10 batters and walked none in a complete game victory.

Zadra was the offensive standout for the Eagles going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in. O'Dell added his fifth double of the season and an RBI in three trips to the plate. Starting pitcher Tony Ales suffered the loss for the Eagles after giving up four earned runs and leaving in the second inning. Taylor Hillman went through the sixth inning and Cody Pfeifer finished the game up for the Eagles.

In the nightcap, Edgewood College jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. After Alex Jaskulski singled and stole second, O'Dell plated him with a double to center field. Jaskulski's hit extended his hitting streak to nine straight games, the longest of his career. The Eagles caught a break when O'Dell scored on a Haverford error on a ball hit by Pat Manning, and again when Jared Raupp scored on another error.

Edgewood College, meanwhile, was getting a nice effort from starting pitcher Andrew Swanson. Swanson would eventually throw seven innings, allowing four earned runs and a walk to go with three strikeouts.

However, the Fords bounced back with a single run in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Edgewood College manufactured a run in the sixth on singles by Raupp and Manning and a sacrifice fly from Lauritzen to tie the game again and send it to extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Haverford's Luke Frankiw walked and stole second before coming home with the winning run on an RBI single by William Bannard.

Jaskulski went 2-for-4 with a stolen base to raise his team-high batting average to .450 through 12 games this season. O'Dell and Eric Curtis each had a double for the Eagles. Brad Clark fell to 0-2 on the season, suffering the loss by pitching the eighth inning to the Fords.

Edgewood College will complete their Florida trip on Saturday with a single game against Johns Hopkins University. The Blue Jays are 6-1 on the season and ranked 24th in the D3Baseball.com Top 25 poll.
