Box Score MADISON, Wis. – A shootout seemed like the only way to settle it, until
Emily Skaer came up golden. Nearly 110 minutes had elapsed in a closely contested NACC Tournament semifinal match between Edgewood College and MSOE, and neither team had scored. However, Skaer's goal with 29 seconds remaining in the second overtime, put the Eagles into the NACC Tournament championship match with a 1-0 win over the Raiders. Edgewood College will host Aurora University at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at Breese Stevens Field for the title.
Skaer, a freshman from Neenah, Wis., wasn't on the field for the first overtime period, but Edgewood College (15-3-1) head coach Tim Alexander inserted her for the second. The Eagles scrambled into the offensive end as the one-minute warning passed. With about 40 seconds to play, fellow freshman Stevie Grable found a little space on the right flank and lofted a ball over her shoulder, toward the middle. Two Raiders defenders allowed the ball to bounce which gave Skaer an opportunity. She pinballed her way between the defenders to get a touch on the ball toward the right post. MSOE (11-10) goalkeeper Margot Giesey raced out to try and cover the ball, but Skaer reached it first. Skaer sliding shot skipped past Giesey and set off the Eagles' celebration on the field.
The opportunities in regulation time weren't many, but some had genuine potential for a goal. In the 62nd minute, Edgewood College's Katie Pampuch took a perfect 1-2 pass from Ashley Pandow and Emily Dorsett and went in hard with a shot, but Giesey saved the ball and covered the rebound. In the 86th minute Jennifer Dailey nearly sent everyone home when she got behind the defense. Dailey's initial shot was stopped by Giesey, but she knocked down an attempted clear and chased down the ball near the end line. However, her sliding shot only found the side netting.
Edgewood College outshot MSOE 13-10 for the match, but the Raiders put six shots on goal compared to the Eagles four. Edgewood College goalkeeper Tori Fortney was up the challenge with six saves.
Top-seeded Edgewood College will now host No. 2 seed Aurora University in Saturday's NACC Tournament championship match at 7:00 p.m. Earlier this season, the Eagles claimed a 1-0 victory over the Spartans at Breese Stevens Field.
