McBain pours in 19, but Eagles fall

Brooke McBain
Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Again, a career individual performance was recorded on Thursday night, but the Edgewood College women's basketball team found themselves another number up in the loss column. Brooke McBain poured in a career-high 19 points, joining two others in double figures, but the Eagles fell to Alverno College 70-61 in the NACC opener.

The Eagles (0-3, 0-1 NACC) fed the post early, scoring six of their first eight points in the paint, but the Inferno still held a 10-8 advantage. Free throws and a jumper put Alverno up 10 with just under two minutes left in the half, but Rachel Pope connected on some late free throws to cut the deficit to eight and the Eagles were down 29-21 at the break.

The Inferno nailed on a three-pointer right out of the locker room, but Edgewood College applied heavy pressure and connected on nearly every position to turn an 11-point deficit into a seven point lead with an 18-0 run. McBain scored seven points in during the spurt to pace the Eagles. The Inferno battled back, however, with free throws and a triple to get within one. Rachel Pope and Mariah Hill hit consecutive layups to push the lead back to five, but then the Eagles went on a five minute, twenty second scoring drought which allowed Alverno (2-0, 1-0 NACC) to grab an 11-point lead. Courtney Spangler ended Inferno rally with a triple, but too many Edgewood College fouls put Alverno on the line and let them maintain the lead.

The Eagles shot 37.7 percent from the field but only 18.8 percent from beyond the arc while Alverno connected on 43.4 percent of their shots. The Inferno also hit 13-of-18 free throws in the second half to ice the game. Alverno benefited from 13 points off of 11 offensive rebounds which made a huge difference in the game.

McBain went off for 19 points and hit all three of her free throws while Pope and Spangler joined her in double digits with 15 and 12, respectively. Chelsey Watkins pulled down a team-high six rebounds while Pope and Spangler had five apiece.

Edgewood College will be back in action this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when the Eagles welcome fourth-ranked UW-Whitewater to the Edgedome. Live video and live stats will be provided.
