Mineau scores twice as Eagles clinch crown

Jenna Mineau
Box Score MADISON, Wis. – Eight years is a long time to wait. Jenna Mineau made sure the Edgewood College women's soccer team didn't need to wait any longer. Mineau tied the match with a first half penalty kick, and then scored the game-winner in the 69th minute to give the Eagles a 2-1 victory over MSOE and clinch Edgewood College's first conference title since 2005.

Needing to win to capture a share of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference title, MSOE (10-9, 7-4 NACC) put the Eagles in a hole early. After Jennifer Dailey's breakaway in the second minute was saved by MSOE's Margot Giesey, the Raiders went ahead in the sixth minute. Aly Loepfe started the transition near midfield and fed a great pass to Sara Travia who was running in on the right post. Travia slipped her shot past Edgewood College goalkeeper Tori Fortney for her 13th goal of the season and a 1-0 MSOE lead.

Play went back and forth in the midfield without any real scoring chances until the 24th minute. An Edgewood College (14-3-1, 10-1 NACC) cross struck the arm of an MSOE defender, bounced directly to Giesey and the center referee whistled for a penalty kick. In stepped Mineau, who had converted all four of her previous penalty kick attempts this season. Mineau calmly beat Giesey to her left to tie the match at one apiece. With five penalty kicks scored this season and six for her career, Mineau set a new Edgewood College record in both categories, breaking the marks of current assistant coach Elaine Gerry.

Neither team generated any great opportunities in the first part of the second half, until the Eagles earned a corner kick in the 69th minute. Hailey Gaines came up from her defensive position and delivered a perfect corner kick near the six-yard line. Mineau came in unmarked and headed the ball at shoulder height, delivering it firmly and cleanly into the back of the net for her ninth goal of the season and 2-1 Eagles lead.

MSOE had one more heart attack left to deliver to Eagle fans. With the Eagles trying to hold on to their lead and the NACC title in the 81st minute, Travia ripped a sliding shot from just outside the penalty area. Fortney got her hands on the ball, but wasn't able to punch it clear. The shot deflected off Fortney's gloves and ricocheted off the underside of the cross bar. While Eagle fans stopped breathing, the ball bounced out from the frame and the Eagles cleared it safely across the end line.

The championship is the 10th in school history for the Eagles' women's soccer program, all under head coach Tim Alexander, but their first as members of the NACC. The Eagles won their previous nine titles in the old Lake Michigan Conference. The Eagles earn the top seed for the NACC Tournament by virtue of their head-to-head victory over co-champion Aurora University. Edgewood College will host a NACC Tournament semifinal match next Wednesday, November 6 at Breese Stevens Field against an opponent to be determined in Sunday's first round matches.
