MADISON, Wis. - The Edgewood College volleyball team established their longest winning streak of the season, and one player reached a personal milestone at the Edgewood College triangular on Saturday. The Eagles swept both Cardinal Stritch University and Lawrence University 3-0 to extend their current winning streak to five matches.
The Eagles faced a Cardinal Stritch squad who entered today with an 11-3 record, but Edgewood College never let the Wolves feel comfortable at the Edgedome taking three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-21. Jessica Martin had four kills in each of the first two sets and finished with five more in the final set for a team-high 13 kills and a .360 hitting percentage. Katie Wedvick had nine kills and led the team with a .389 attack percentage. Led by Rachel Thomsen's 13 digs, the Eagles defended Cardinal Stritch well holding them to an attack percentage of just .148. Lindsey Swansby had 41 assists.
In the second match, Mallory Palmer brought her cannon, unleashing rocket attacks at the Lawrence University (5-9) as the Eagles rolled to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-12 victory. Palmer had 17 kills, including ones that put her over 1,500 kills for her career. She joins Mandie Armstrong (1995-98) as the only two Eagles to ever reach that milestone and currently has 1,513 kills. After a tight first set, where the Eagles rallied back from a 20-18 deficit, Edgewood College never trailed in the match again. In that first set, Wedvick scored the final two points on kills as part of her nine kills in the match. Martin also had nine kills for the Eagles. Thomsen's 16 digs and Swansby's 44 assists also led the team.
Edgewood College returns to Northern Athletics Conference action on Tuesday, when they travel to Fond du Lac for a date with Marian University. The following day, the Eagles will complete their suspended match against the University of Dubuque from the power failure suffered in the Edgedome on September 4.
