HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Edgewood College men's golf team hoped for a Cinderella story that would carry them at least past the cut line and into the third and fourth rounds of the NCAA Division III Championships. Unfortunately, a rough first day on the El Campeon course meant the clock would strike midnight on the Eagles after Wednesday's second round. Edgewood College completes their first NCAA Championship with a 32nd place finish.
Some big numbers early on Tuesday spelled trouble for the Eagles at El Campeon, which played more difficult than Las Colinas on both days. Senior Brent Quade, playing in the No. 1 position, bounced back from the front nine to shoot a one over-par 38 on the back for a team-low score of 80. Kenneth Rucker and Tyler Cobb turned in identical scores of 42-39 for an 81. Andrew Cobb ran into serious trouble on the back nine to finish with an 88, while Logan Kranz shot a 93. The Eagles were tied for 35th place after the first round with a score of 330.
Most of the team found the second round on Las Colinas to be more agreeable on Wednesday. Kranz shook off his first day struggles to post the Eagles' lowest round of the tournament with a three over-par 75. Rucker and Andrew Cobb also broke 80, shooting a 77 and a 79, respectively. Quade wrapped up his career with an 81 while Tyler Cobb finished with an 82. The Eagles round two total of 312 gave them a two-day score of 642.
Rucker's two-day total of 158 led the team, followed by Northern Athletics Conference medalist Quade at 161. Tyler Cobb beat his older brother Andrew by four strokes with a 163 compared to a 167. Kranz completed his career with a score of 168.
Edgewood College won their third Northern Athletics Conference title this season and reached the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time in school history.
