AURORA, Ill. – The Edgewood College women's soccer team made their first Northern Athletics Conference Tournament Championship appearance since 2008, but could not duplicate the result. The Eagles could not overcome two first half goals by 15th ranked Aurora University and fell in the title match 2-0.
Edgewood College (15-4-1) found themselves in an early hole after Aurora's Nicole Wolfe ripped a score to the upper left corner just five minutes into the game. Six minutes later, the Spartans (19-1-1) tacked on another score as Raquel Rodruiguez punched in a ball that rebounded off the hands of Eagles' goalkeeper Tori Fortney. Edgewood College could only muster two shots in the first half compared to the Spartans' 16. Emily Dorsett and Kristina Santaga both attempted a shot, but neither could find the back of the net.
Although Edgewood College was outshot 16-1 in the second half, the Eagles held the Spartans scoreless. Edgewood College had few opportunities in the second half, as Aurora's defense proved why they are ranked first in the NAC. Elaine Gerry fired the Eagles only shot of the half, but it was wide left.
The Eagles' Fortney racked up an impressive eight saves in the game while Aurora's goalkeeper Liz Wong played 90 minutes without facing a shot. After leading the regular season in corner kicks, Edgewood College has held without one the entire game.
The Eagles graduate six seniors in Ashley Alonso, Emily Berns, Kristi Frisch, Gerry, Elizabeth Koller, and Santaga. Although Edgewood College loses these key players to graduation, the Eagles still have a relatively young roster to look forward to. With 15 wins this year, the Eagles tied their highest win total in two years.
