MADISON, Wis. – The spell that the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team has cast over Edgewood College remained unbroken on Sunday afternoon. The Pointers won their 11th straight match over the Eagles, claiming a 3-0 victory at Breese Stevens Field. With the loss, Edgewood College had their season-long seven match winning streak snapped.
UW-Stevens Point (12-4) struck early, scoring in the eighth minute of the match. Kim Jobke fed a pass to Jessica Ruch near the top of the box. Ruch's shot was well placed, nestling into the upper corner of the net past Edgewood College goalkeeper Tori Fortney.
The Eagles and Pointers played the rest of the first half relatively equally, but neither team added another goal. Edgewood College (14-3) had a chance to score in the closing seconds of the first half after a Pointer foul resulted in a clock stoppage for a yellow card and a free kick with four seconds remaining. Ashley Alonso delivered the free kick toward the far post, but the ball sailed over the heads of the Eagles and out of play.
Edgewood College seemed to have the best of the action early in the second half, but the failure to clear the ball by the Eagles' defense led to a pair of Pointer goals. In the 63rd minute, the Eagles attempted to clear a Pointer cross with a header, but the ball landed in front of the net where Jobke stuck it home for a 2-0 Pointer lead. In the 70th minute, a strong individual effort by Sammy Greer kept the ball alive in the box, where she poked a shot past the Eagle's Kristi Frisch who had replaced Fortney in the 67th minute.
Edgewood College had their best chance of the game in shortly after the Pointers' 3rd goal. Emily Berns found empty space near the top of the box and fired a shot the deflected off a Pointer defender. However, UW-Stevens Point goalkeeper Kristen Churkey adjusted to the redirection and made the save to preserve her shutout.
Berns totaled three of the Eagles' seven shots and put two on net to lead the offensive attack. Fortney made one save as her record fell to 5-2 on the season.
Edgewood College will wrap up the regular season with Senior Night on Tuesday. The Eagles will host Lakeland College in their final match before the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament. Edgewood College is the No. 2 seed and will enjoy a first round bye before hosting a semifinal match on Tuesday, October 30.
