Box Score
MADISON, Wis. – It didn't take the Edgewood College women's soccer team long to show off the offense that scored 74 goals a season ago. Three minutes and 29 seconds, to be exact. After the early tally, the Eagles turned to their new freshman class in the second half and cruised to a 3-0 victory over Lawrence University on the opening night of the college soccer season.
Before every fan had settled in their seat, a familiar combination put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Junior
Molly Haertle played a cross from the right that glanced off the outstretched fingers of Viking goalkeeper Cassandra Burke. Fellow junior
Elaine Gerry was waiting on the doorstep for the easy finish. For Gerry, it was the 52nd goal of her career as she continues to climb toward the top three scorers in Edgewood College history. The Eagles controlled possession much of the rest of the first half outshooting Lawrence 8-1, but couldn't add to their lead.
It wasn't until the 58th minute that Edgewood College (1-0) would strike again. This time a pair of freshman hooked up for their first collegiate points.
Ashley Alonso played a beautiful corner kick, which found
Jenna Mineau crashing the goal box in stride. Mineau's header made the score 2-0 and gave the Eagles breathing room.
Another freshman,
Emily Dorsett also found the net in her first collegiate game. After missing a scoring opportunity in the 78th minute, Dorsett made her next chance count. She slipped through the defense on the right wing, and when no Viking defender challenged her she slid a low shot past Burke to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the 85th minute.
Junior goalkeeper
Kristi Frisch made five saves to record her first win and shutout of the year. Four of her stops came in the second half, as Lawrence University (0-1), an NCAA Tournament team last season, attempted to rally.
Edgewood College will face another Midwest Conference foe on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles take the short trip south to play Beloit College at 12:00 p.m. at the Strong Complex.
