MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's tennis team started a grueling weekend of four road matches with a pair of victories. The Eagles topped Alverno College 9-0 Saturday morning before squeaking out a 6-3 victory at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
In the afternoon match, it looked as though Wisconsin Lutheran (8-4, 7-1 NAC) would take a 2-1 lead after splitting No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Warriors' No. 2 doubles team held a 5-1 advantage over the Eagles' duo of
Taylor Storbakken and
Kristen Boone. However, the tandem came all the way back and took the match 8-6 to put the Eagles up 2-1 in the dual match.
The singles portion of the dual match was decided at the No. 5 and No. 6 flights after the team split the first four matches. At No. 5 singles, Boone took the first set 6-0 before dropping the second set 6-2. However, Boone bounced back to take the decisive set 6-0 to give the Eagles the win.
Laura Olsen came from behind at No. 6 singles, 2-6, 6-1, and 6-4 to give Edgewood College the 6-3 win and hand the Warriors their first Northern Athletics Conference loss of the season.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles (6-2, 6-1 NAC) topped Alverno (3-5, 3-3 NAC) 9-0. Olsen and partner
Kelly Olia won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles while
Shae Beckwith and
Jessi Ditzler won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, Olsen won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles while Olia and Boone won their matches by identical scores of 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
The Eagles will stay on the road on Saturday, traveling to the Chicagoland to play Aurora University and Benedictine University. Edgewood College will play Aurora at 9:00 a.m. and Benedictine at 2:30 p.m.
