SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - Winning one game and getting into the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament was never a sure thing, but Edgewood College had to believe they would come through with a better performance with the season on the line. The Eagles failed to score a run in either game against Lakeland College and ended their season with a resounding thud, losing 1-0 and 4-0 to the Muskies.
In game one, Edgewood College received the pitching performance they needed to reach postseason. Blake O'Brien threw a complete game three-hitter, giving up just one run on two hits in the first inning. Lakeland's Mike Ruzek scored David Novak from first on a double to left center field. O'Brien gave up just one more hit the rest of the game and none past the fourth inning, but the Eagles offense gave him no run support.
Edgewood College (18-22, 12-10 NAC) put runners on second base in the third, fourth and sixth innings, but their best chance to score came in the seventh. Alex Jaskuksi doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning and moved to third on
Scott Ortega's ground out. The next batter,
Andrew King lifted a fly ball to center field, but Andrew Schartner threw a strike to the plate to cut down Jaskulski and end the threat.
Jake Zadra was the only Eagle to register two hits in the game, and he added his ninth stolen base of the season.
The second game started off similar to the first, with a Muskie run, this time on a solo home run from Schartner. Eagle starting pitcher
Glenn Nowell limited Lakeland College to just that one run and four hits, despite hitting six batters with pitches. Lakeland College added two runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth, but the Muskies had more than enough runs to beat the Eagles' offense.
Ryan Walker went 2-for-4 with a double and Ortega also went 2-for-4. Jaskulski added a double in three at-bats.
Edgewood College's losses end their season at 18-22, which snaps their streak of seven consecutive 20-win seasons.
