MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Edgewood College had the chance for their first Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader sweep of the season, but the Eagles let game one to MSOE slip away 6-5 in 10 innings. The Eagles bounced back to score 11 runs in the seventh inning of game two and claim a 13-3 victory.
Edgewood College (9-15, 4-6 NAC) tacked on a ninth inning insurance run on an RBI single by
Marc Ostrowski to take a 5-3 lead in game one. The Eagles proceeded to load the bases, but could not come up with a final dagger. In the bottom of the ninth, the Raiders scored one run on an RBI single by Wes Stasik and scored the tying run on an Edgewood College error.
The Eagles went 1-2-3 in the top of the 10th inning, setting the stage for MSOE pinch hitter Mike Riccardi to be the hero. Riccardi singled up the middle to score pinch runner Tyler Magyar for a 6-5 Raider win. It was just MSOE's second win over Edgewood College in the last 24 meetings dating back to 2001.
The loss spoiled another strong performance by freshman pitcher
Trevor Koehn. Koehn went eight innings and struck out seven, while allowing four earned runs on nine hits.
Kyle Fischer came in to pitch the 10th inning and suffered the first loss of his career.
Mike Selvaggi and
Mitch Mogensen each had two hits including a double, to lead the Eagles on offense.
The second game appeared to be a pitchers' duel until the Eagles exploded for 11 runs in the seventh inning. Senior starting pitcher
Kyle Smith had scattered 11 hits in the first six innings, but trailed 3-2. Everything caved in for the Raiders the next inning, when the Eagles sent 15 batters to the plate and collected nine hits.
Treye Dennison delivered the biggest blow of the inning with a two-run double to center field. Smith finished off the Raiders in the bottom of the seventh to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Jake Zadra returned to the lineup in game one, and broke out in game two, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Scott Ortega and
Andrew King each went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. For Smith, it was his first win in five starts this season and his second career complete game.
Edgewood College will return home on Monday to play Dominican University in a doubleheader originally scheduled for Saturday. The Eagles and Stars will get underway at 5:00 p.m. at Stampfl Field in Verona.
