MADISON, Wis. – With a defensive-minded opponent like Dominican University, the Edgewood College women's soccer team knew one goal might enough to advance to past their Northern Athletics Conference Tournament first round match. The Eagles got the goal they needed on a 14th minute score by
Katie Pampuch and held on for a 1-0 victory over the Stars at rainy Breese Stevens Field. The third-seeded Eagles advance to a semifinal match at second-seeded Marian University on Wednesday.
Edgewood College (14-4-1) applied most of the pressure in the match, especially in the early going, tallying the first three shots of the game. In the 14th minute, junior forward
Kristina Santaga picked off a clear attempt from a Dominican defender. She moved in quickly on the dribble, but was cut off near the top of the penalty box. Santaga, turned to the middle to attempt a shot off her right foot, but the ball was deflected high in the air toward the right half of the goal box. Enter Pampuch, who never stopped her run down the right side of the field. Pampuch ran under the ball and picked it out of the air with a soft volley. Her shot went over Stars' goalkeeper Megan Schulz's right shoulder and into the net.
Edgewood College continued to pressure through the first half, eventually outshooting Dominican 10-2 in the first 45 minutes. The Eagles put four shots on net. In the second half, the Eagles continued to attack the net, but never added an insurance goal.
Jenna Mineau's blast off the crossbar in the 75th minute was as close as the Eagles came to a second goal.
In the final 10 minutes, Dominican University (10-8-1) pushed nine and 10 field players forward trying to tie the match. The Stars best chance came when they earned their first corner kick in the 89th minute, but the Eagles defense and goalkeeper
Kristi Frisch were up to the task to preserve the victory.
Edgewood College now moves on to play second-seeded Marian University. The Eagles defeated the Sabres 2-0 at Breese Stevens Field on September 28. Wednesday's match will kickoff at 3:00 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament championship game on Saturday.
