MILWAUKEE, Wis. – As two of the Northern Athletics Conference's top three all-time scorers, all eyes were on Edgewood College's
Elaine Gerry and MSOE's Jessica Axt on Wednesday night. That was until
Emily Berns stole the show. Berns scored two goals in the first 13 minutes of the game as Edgewood College defeated MSOE in a pivotal Northern Athletics Conference women's soccer match.
In a game the featured only 14 shots combined between the two teams, the Edgewood College (9-4-1, 6-2-1 NAC) drew first blood early. Shortly following a corner kick in the seventh minute by
Ashley Alonso, Berns tucked home a shot past Raider goalkeeper Emma Lumpe.
Just six minutes later, Berns struck again. The junior from Lake Mills capitalized on an assist from Gerry for her fourth goal of the season to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
MSOE (9-5, 6-2 NAC) responded just before halftime and it was the nation's leading scorer Axt who did it. Axt scored her 26th goal of the season off an assist from Kate Herrmann in the 43rd minute. Ultimately, it would turn out to be the Raiders only shot on goal for the entire match.
In the second half, only Berns and teammate
Emily Dorsett recorded shots on goal. Each team ended the game with seven total shots, although Edgewood College put three on net, compared to MSOE's one.
The win pushed the Eagles into a third place tie with Dominican University. The top two teams in the standings will earn a bye to the NAC Tournament semifinals, while the third and fourth seed will host first round matches. Edgewood College will host Alverno College in their next match. The Eagles and Inferno kickoff from Breese Stevens Field at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
