APPLETON, Wis. – Some nights, a team's offense might be dormant, in which case there defense has to step up to slow down the opposing offense. The Edgewood College women's soccer team had to rely on their defense at Lawrence University on Tuesday night as they escaped Appleton with a narrow 1-0 nonconference victory.
Neither team was able to take advantage of their opportunities in the first half with the Lawrence (3-6) taking six shots to Edgewood College's five. The teams earned the same amount of corner kicks in the frame, three and the Eagles (8-2) put two shots on goal to the Vikings one.
In the second half, the Eagles controlled play, outshooting Lawrence 9-5 taking four more corners in the frame.
Elaine Gerry finally broke through and got the Eagles on the scoreboard in the 64th minute. Gerry was awarded her second penalty kick this season and beat the Vikings' goalkeeper, Ariana Flood, to give Edgewood College the advantage. The Eagles have taken two penalty kicks all season and converted on both. Gerry has taken two penalty kicks in her career and is 2-for-2.
The Eagles outshot the Vikings 14-11 in the contest and took four more corner kicks. Flood made seven saves in the contest while the Eagles' goalkeeper,
Kristi Frisch, made three saves and earned her Northern Athletics Conference leading fifth shutout of the season. Gerry led Edgewood College with seven shots taken with four being on target and
Kristina Santaga ripped five shots, putting two on net.
Edgewood College will return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to Dominican University on Saturday. Dominican University will provide live stats and live video for the 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
