MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's soccer team was looking to keep up with their high scoring ways when they opened Northern Athletics Conference play against Aurora University. However, the Spartans had other ideas as they shutout the high powered Eagle offense in a 1-0 victory.
Aurora (3-2, 1-0 NAC) took the early lead as Christine Kwilosz received a pass from Sarah Boniface on the right side and slid it into the lower left side of the net in the 10th minute to give the Spartans the lead.
The Eagles (3-1, 0-1 NAC) had plenty of opportunities to tie the score throughout the game, with the first coming in the 26th minute. Elaine Gerry found herself on a breakaway and with the Spartan keeper coming out to challenge her. Gerry ripped a shot from 15 yards that was saved by the keeper to keep the score at 1-0. In the final minute of the half, Edgewood College put pressure on the Spartans again as Emily Daniels ripped a shot that was saved and Katie Pampuch took a shot that went wide.
In the second half, Gerry got another breakaway in the 50th minute, but she pushed a shot wide right and the deficit remained at one. The Eagles then got a couple more opportunities in the 67th and 68th minutes. In the 67th minute there was a loose ball in front of the Spartan goal, but no one could get a foot on the ball to slide it in. Just a minute later, Kelsey Beck took a cross from Sophie Rodriguez and headed just high.
From that point on, the Spartan defense tightened up and only allowed one more Eagle shot as they took the game 1-0.
The Spartan defense held the Eagle offense to eight shots on the day, four of which were on net and saved by Nicky Cardon, Aurora's goalkeeper. Aurora took 11 shots of their own, with six being stopped by Edgewood College's keeper, Kristi Frisch.
