MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - After a pair of rough road trips against top-level competition, the Edgewood College volleyball team is likely looking forward to returning to the Todd Wehr Edgedome. In the final day of the Augsburg College Invitational, the Eagles dropped a 3-0 decision to St. Benedict (Minn.) and then had a two set lead on Macalester College before falling 3-2 in the seventh place match.
In the first match, Edgewood College (1-7) couldn't shake off their early morning wake-up call dropping the first set to the Blazers 25-9. The Eagles responded with better efforts in the last two sets, but still fell by scores of 25-21 and 25-17. Mallory Palmer and Aryn Wellnitz each totaled a team-high seven kills, however the Eagles were plagued by 28 attack errors in the match. Dacy Swansby had a solo block and an assisted block, and her sister, Lindsey Swansby, turned in 20 assists.
The second match appeared early on like the Eagles would snap their five-match losing streak, as they ran out to 25-19 and 25-16 wins in the first two sets. Edgewood College hit .261 in those two sets. However, the Scots found their legs in the final three sets, committing just six errors for the remainder of the match, and pulling out a narrow 15-12 win in the decisive fifth set. Palmer and Wellnitz again led the Eagles with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Brittany Bylsma also cracked double digits with 10 kills of her own. Senior Kim Lueck racked up 17 digs, while Lindsey Swansby dished out 44 assists.
Edgewood College will return home for a Tuesday date with Wisconsin Lutheran College at the Todd Wehr Edgedome in their Northern Athletics Conference opener. The match will be broadcast live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
