MADISON, Wis. – Despite being outshot by 15 shots, the Edgewood College men's soccer team found a way to keep the game with Aurora University close and eventually send the contest to overtime. However, the Spartans tallied a goal on the first shot of overtime to take the contest 2-1.
Aurora (3-2, 1-0 NAC) struck early as Mike Emma netted his first goal of the season in the fifth minute. The goal came off a free kick by Anthony Amedei. Emma received the ball by the left post, he then bounced the ball off the ground, before it ricocheted off the crossbar and crossed the goal line to give the Spartans the advantage.
Edgewood College (1-3, 0-1 NAC) then put pressure on Aurora as Nate Hedrington ripped a pair of shots that were saved by Aurora's keeper, Ethan Cashen. The pressure finally paid off in the 27th minute when Paul Domann received a pass from Hedrington at the left side of the net. Domann then slid the ball into the left side of the net to knot the score at one.
After the score was tied at halftime, the Spartans put pressure on the Eagles in the second half, outshooting the Eagles 15-1 in the frame.
Aurora's best opportunity to take the lead came in the 78th minute as Amedei took a shot from the top of the box. Edgewood College's goalkeeper, Kyle Koenig, made a spectacular diving save to keep the score tied.
The Eagles then countered with their best chance to score just four minutes later. Edgewood College took a free kick that ended up bouncing by left post of the Spartan goal, but the Eagles could not corral the loose ball and slide it in to take the lead.
With neither team able to net a goal in the second half, the contest went to overtime with the teams tied at one. Only four minutes into the extra session, Christian Foote took a shot from the left sideline that ended up in the upper right corner of the net to give the Spartans the 2-1 victory.
In the contest, Koenig recorded a career-high nine saves, eight of which came in the second half. The Spartans outshot the Eagles 21-6 in the tight victory.
Edgewood College will next be in action on Wednesday when they travel to Lawrence University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
