WATERTOWN, Wis. - The rain came heavy to south central Wisconsin Friday evening, but the Edgewood College baseball team managed to get in one rain-shortened game before the second game of their doubleheader was washed away. The Eagles scored multiple runs in five of the six full innings to claim a 17-3 victory over Maranatha Baptist.
It took Edgewood College (22-12, 12-5 NAC) just three batters to get on the board, when Jimy Landwehr tripled to score Erik Massey who had walked in the first inning. Mike Selvaggi added a two-run single as the Eagles took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Mitch Mogensen, Treye Dennison and Selvaggi drove in runs in the third inning for a 7-0 lead over Maranatha Baptist (4-16, 0-15 NAC).
Edgewood College added two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, before exploding for a six-run sixth inning. Massey drove in two-runs with a single and Otto Muehlenberg recorded an RBI single, the first hit of his collegiate career.
On the mound, junior Kyle Smith received his first start in nine career appearances and performed well, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out five Crusader hitters. He pitched all six innings to earn his first career complete game.
Senior Tim Barry pounded out four hits in five at-bats, including two doubles and scored a career-high five runs. Selvaggi went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs. Mogensen was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Landwehr had two hits and Steve Binder 1-for-2, as each player notched an RBI triple.
The second game of the doubleheader was rained out and will be made up on a date yet to be determined.
Edgewood College will be back in action on Saturday when they host Northern Athletics Conference co-leader Concordia University Wisconsin at noon at Stampfl Field. The Eagles will celebrate LSM Chiropractic Senior Day by honoring their nine graduating seniors between games of the doubleheader.
