Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - In the final game of their spring trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, the Edgewood College baseball team used a big third inning to down Purchase College (N.Y.) 17-5. The Eagles finished their trip 4-4 and return north with a 9-5 overall record.

In the bottom of the third inning, Edgewood College scored 11 runs, all after two were out. The Eagles had 11 straight batters reach base safely in the frame. The biggest blow was a two-out, inside-the-park, two-run home run by senior Steve Binder. Binder's drive to the right field corner eluded the Panthers' outfielder, and the relay to the plate was not in time. Mike Selvaggi also had an RBI double in the Eagles' highest scoring inning of the season.

The Eagles' starting pitcher Scott Winters improved to 2-1 on the season, throwing five complete innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits. Winters struck out three batters and walked four. Brad DeVault pitched the sixth inning, while Patrick Clerkin didn't give up an earned run over the final three innings.

Mitch Mogensen led the Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a triple and four runs batted in. Jimy Landwehr went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Ryan Walker went 2-for-5 with a triple and a stolen base.

Edgewood College will open their conference season before the even return to Madison. The Eagles will play a doubleheader at Aurora University on Monday, and then return home to prepare for the first home games of the season, a doubleheader with Benedictine University on Wednesday.
