NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Edgewood College men's golf team claimed the team title at the Northern Athletics Conference Spring AQ meet, but couldn't overtake Aurora University for the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. Senior Aaron Gavin won individual medalist honors just as he did at last fall's NAC Championships.
In order to gain the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, the Eagles entered the tournament needing to make up a 10-stroke gap on the Spartans left from October's NAC Championships. The Eagles fell another shot back finishing with a 307 on Monday, behind Aurora's 306. However on Tuesday, the Eagles put on all the pressure the Spartans could handle. Edgewood College shot a 308, while Aurora finished with 317. The Spartans hung on with a four-day total of 1,243 narrowly edging the Eagles' 1,245 and punching their ticket to the NCAAs.
Gavin, a senior from South Milwaukee, fired an opening day 73 and followed it with a 77 for a two-day total of 150 (6-over par). He nipped Gary Petit of Lakeland College by one stroke. Logan Kranz also cracked the top ten with a score of 155 good for a ninth place finish. Mark Fields shot a 76 on the second day to place 15th with a score of 158. All five Eagles finished in the top 20 with Brent Quade and Mike Battista placing 19th with matching scores of 161.
Edgewood College will conclude their season on April 30, as they host their own quadrangular at Bishops Bay Country Club in Middleton.
