AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Edgewood College baseball team scored 11 runs in the first four innings and took advantage of 15 bases on balls issued by Purchase College (N.Y.) pitchers to claim a dominant 20-4 victory over the Panthers at the RussMatt Collegiate Invitational. Miles Mayer earned his first victory of the season in the win.
Senior Jimy Landwehr went 3-for-5 for the game, including a double and a pair of runs batted in. Fellow senior Erik Massey had a pair of hits and a team-high three RBIs. Darren Besch didn't enter the game until the seventh inning, but recorded and double and a triple in the Eagles' eight-run seventh inning. Besch also drove in a pair of runs with his triple. Tim Barry extended his hitting streak to nine games, tying his career high with first inning single.
Mayer only ran into serious trouble in the fifth inning, but otherwise cruised to his first win of 2010. He pitched six innings, striking out four and giving up three earned runs. Freshman Tony Ales and junior James Bertakis combined to throw a perfect, seventh, eighth and ninth innings to finish the game.
Edgewood College (8-5) will finish the Florida portion of their trip with another game against Purchase College (9-9) on Friday.
