Eagles bounce back to pound Oles 17-5

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Edgewood College baseball team snapped a modest three-game losing streak in emphatic fashion on Tuesday, trouncing St. Olaf College 17-5 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Eagles pounded out 19 hits and avenged a 12-4 loss to the Oles from Sunday.

The Eagles blew the game open with a seven-run third inning. Andrew King stroked a bases loaded, two-run single to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead. The next batter, Seth Astroth followed with a two-run triple to give the Eagles all the runs they would need in the game.

The Eagles led 9-3 in the bottom of the fifth when they tacked on four more runs. Edgewood College (7-4) opened the inning with five straight singles, including a two-RBI hit be Ryan Walker. In the ninth inning, Jimy Landwehr added a two-run single of his own.

Freshman Blake O'Brien earned the win, throwing eight full innings. O'Brien allowed just three earned runs and struck out four, while walking just one. James Bertakis relieved O'Brien to finish the ninth inning.

Five different hitters had three hits apiece for the Eagles. The team was led by their fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth hitters who combined to go 11-for-19 with six runs batted in for the game. Walker went 3-for-6 with a double, two stolen bases and three RBIs. Landwehr, Astroth and Binder all went 3-for-5, with Mike Selvaggi going 3-for-4. King shared team RBI honors with Walker by driving in three runs. The Eagles established new season highs in both runs and hits.

Edgewood College will get another crack at top-ranked University of St. Thomas on Wednesday. The Eagles and Tommies will throw out their first pitch at 11:00 eastern time.
