Box Score
MADISON, Wis. - On wet and muddy turf at Breese Stevens Field, the Edgewood College women's soccer guaranteed themselves at least one extra game on their home field. The Eagles scored six times in the second half to blow away Alverno College in a 7-1 victory. The win, coupled with a tie between Marian and Benedictine, guaranteed the Eagles a spot in the NAC Tournament and a first round home game.
Edgewood College (13-4-1, 8-3 NAC) fired shot after shot at Alverno College goalkeeper Samantha Robinson in the first half, but only managed one goal.
Molly Haertle took a nifty give-and-go pass from
Janna Yost and scored in the seventh minute of play. However, Robinson would make six first half saves to keep the margin at one at halftime.
The flood began in the second half, with sophomore
Elaine Gerry bursting open the dam. Just 90 seconds into the half
Tami Oilschlager served up a perfect corner kick to the near post. Both Gerry and
Kelsey Beck leaded for the ball, but it was Gerry's head that made contact for her 13th goal of the season. In the 54th minute, Gerry's cross from the left was booted into the Alverno net by a defender for an own goal. Nine minutes later, it was Haertle finding Gerry in the box, for a hard shot under the cross bar and a 4-0 lead.
Freshman
Katie Pampuch added two goals of her own, first beating a defender on the dribble and scoring in the 70th minute, and then picking up a rebound off of a 2-on-1 attack from
Alice Udelhofen and
Erica Svjose in the 76th minute. Fellow freshman
Hailey Boyle finished off the scoring for the Eagles taking a long pass from
Lorena Kempinen and scoring with less that 10 seconds remaining in the match.
Only an 81st minute goal by Alverno College's Kelsey Kochanowksi spoiled the shutout. The goal off a header from a Nava Moniriarani corner kick was the Inferno's only shot of the game, and marked Alverno's first goal ever against Edgewood College in eight matches all-time.
Edgewood College goalkeeper
Kristi Frisch never faced a shot in 68 minutes of playing time, before yielding to
Amber Hranicka. Robinson made 12 saves for Alverno College (7-11, 2-8 NAC) as the Eagles outshot the Inferno 40-1 for the match.
The victory puts Edgewood College into fourth place with one match remaining next Thursday against Maranatha Baptist. If the Eagles win, they will vault over MSOE and grab the third seed for the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament. Regardless of Thursday's outcome, the Eagles will host a NAC Tournament first round match on Sunday, October 31 at Breese Stevens Field.
