MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Opponents don't care if you're at full strength when game time arrives. A shorthanded Edgewood College women's basketball team learned that lesson the hard way as Alverno College claimed a 76-57 victory on Monday night at Reiman Gymnasium. The win marked the Inferno's first win over Edgewood College in series history.
Edgewood College (4-8, 4-2 NAC) traded leads with Alverno three times in the first half. After Lisa Sorgi gave the Inferno a 20-13 with a little over 11 minutes to go, the Eagles began their best stretch of the game. Emily Decorah, Hannah Schultz and Lexie Schmitgen scored consecutive baskets to cut the lead to one. Shortly thereafter, Schmitgen nailed a three-point basket from the left corner to tie the game at 25. The Eagles then went on a 7-2 run to take a 32-27 lead, before settling for a slim 35-34 halftime lead.
However, Alverno College (4-8, 2-4 NAC) asserted themselves right out of the locker room and took control of the game. Eight seconds into the half, the Inferno took the lead for good on a jumper by Shataya McComb. Consecutive hoops by Susan Paskey and Decorah would bring the Eagles within one at 45-44 with less than 13 minutes to play, but that was as close as the Eagles would get. The Inferno went on a 14-2 run to take a 59-46 lead with 6:15 to play and sent the Eagles on their way to their fourth straight defeat.
Despite the losses, Decorah, a freshman forward, has put together two strong games. She scored 17 against 14th-ranked UW-Whitewater last Wednesday, and put up a season-high 20 points against Alverno. Decorah went 8-for-16 from the field, including 4-for-7 from the three-point line. Junior guard Shae Beckwith added 10 points and a team-high five assists. Senior forward Hannah Schultz pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Eagles on the glass.
Edgewood College will get four days to heal before their next Northern Athletics Conference game. The Eagles will host Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday, January 9. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. and the game can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
