Walsh fires one-hitter on last day of season

Rick Walsh

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Senior pitcher Rick Walsh made his final appearance as an Eagle memorable by firing a complete game, one-hit shutout at MSOE on the final day of the regular season. The Eagles swept the Raiders 4-0 in game one behind Walsh and then claimed the nightcap 12-8.

Walsh was far from perfect, mixing in nine walks and two hit by pitches among seven strikeouts. However, he may have been just wild enough to keep the Raiders off balance, as only a seventh inning single by Andy Krzyzanowski prevented a no-hitter.

The Eagles plated single runs in four different innings, with an RBI groundout by Justin Dahmen in the third and a solo home run by Tim Barry in the fourth. Scott Ortega singled in a run in the seventh and Jimy Landwehr added a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning for the final margin.

Cory McCullick had two hits including a triple, while Ortega and Mitch Mogensen also had a pair of hits, with Mogensen recording a double. Catcher Matt Werner slugged his first triple of the season.

In game two, Edgewood College rallied from an 8-7 deficit with five runs in the final three innings to win their season finale. Landwehr drove in a pair of runs with a single in the seventh inning to put the Eagles ahead 9-8, before adding three more runs in the ninth. Adam Victorn doubled in a run in the ninth and Landwehr added a well-executed squeeze bunt for the second run. McCullick doubled to complete the scoring.

Glenn Nowell took over for starter Nathan Marlowe in the sixth inning to earn the victory. Nowell gave up just one hit and struck out two over the final 3.2 innings. Landwehr went 4-for-4 in the game with two stolen bases and three runs batted in. Seth Astroth had a home run and a double in four at-bats.

Edgewood College ends the regular season with a record of 21-17. Their 12-10 record in the Northern Athletics Conference left them in sixth place for the second consecutive season.
