VERONA, Wis. – The combination of tough UW-Stevens Point pitching and shaky Edgewood College defense conspired to end the Eagles nine-game winning streak at Stampfl Field on Thursday. The Pointers shut down the Eagles in a doubleheader, taking game one 5-0 and completing the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, UW-Stevens Point ace Garrett Nix worked out of a first inning bases loaded jam and then faced the minimum number of hitters from the second through the eighth inning. The Eagles attempted to put together a rally in the ninth inning when Steve Binder and Tim Barry drew walks sandwiched around an Alex Berta single to load the bases with one out. The Pointers gave the ball to closer Jeff Zielke, who induced a double play ground ball from Seth Astroth to end the game.
Barry went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to lead the Eagles in hitting. Eagle starter Scott Winters held the Pointers at bay for the first five innings before surrendering three runs in the sixth. He finished with three earned runs allowed on five hits with seven strikeouts, but suffered his second loss of the season.
In game two, it was the Edgewood College defense that let down starter Glenn Nowell. The Eagles gave up five unearned runs on seven errors. The Pointers opened a 3-0 lead in the fifth, before the Eagles got their only run of the day. Cory McCullick reached on a fielder's choice and then took second and third on a pair of balks by Pointer starter Joel Delorit. Berta then singled to left field driving in McCullick.
Delorit and Zielke combined for 13 strikeouts as Delorit moved to 2-1 on the season. Mitch Mogensen went 3-for-4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Jimy Landwehr had a pair of singles in four at bats to improve his batting average to a team-best .421. Nowell gave up six runs on four hits, but just one run was earned. Nathan Marlowe pitched the final three innings and struck out three batters.
Edgewood College (15-6) will be back in Northern Athletics Conference action on Saturday when they travel to Lakeland College for a Saturday doubleheader. The Eagles lead the NAC with a 6-0 conference record.
