VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team has been bailing water for the last two weeks, but on Wednesday night their ship finally sunk. The Eagles dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Dominican University 1-0 and 13-3 to fall to 10-10 in the league and eliminate themselves from reaching the NAC Baseball Tournament.

In the first game, the Eagles managed just four hits off Dominican starter Anthony Davey who improved to 5-0 with his second complete game shutout of the season. The Stars scored the only run of the game in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Lenny Conzalo.

Rick Walsh had his second straight strong pitching performance without a win to show for it. Walsh gave up nine hits and struck out nine batters in nine innings of work. Justin Dahmen had a leadoff double in the eighth inning marking the only time an Eagle reached second base the entire game.

The Stars opened up a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning of game two, but the Eagles put together their best offense of the night in the bottom of the fourth. Mitch Mogensen hit and infield single to score Steve Binder from third base. The Eagles then loaded the bases with two outs on Matt Werner single and a walk issued to Ryan Walker. Darren Besch then drew a base on balls of his own to trim the lead to 3-2. It stayed that way until the sixth when the Stars piled up four runs on six hits to put the game nearly out of reach at 7-2. Scott Ortega singled home Werner in the sixth, but the Stars posted another run in the seventh and five more in the ninth.

Treye Dennison collected two base hits to lead the Eagles. Cory McCullick picked up his 28th stolen base of the season. Starter Kyle Lode took the loss going five and one-third innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits.

Edgewood College (19-17, 10-10 NAC) will close out their 2009 schedule on Sunday with a doubleheader at MSOE. First pitch is slated for noon.
