SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - After being held to one run in 18 innings against UW-Stevens Point, the Edgewood College baseball team was anxious to swing the bats again. When they did, Lakeland College was caught in the crossfire. The Eagles exploded for 32 runs and 38 hits in a 13-5 and 19-3 doubleheader sweep of the Muskies.
Game one started quietly as Eagle starter Rick Walsh and Lakeland pitcher Lee Chepil held their respective opponent scoreless for the first three innings. However, the Eagles didn't stay quiet for any longer, as they exploded for eight runs in the top of the fourth inning. The big hits were a two-run double by Dan Gugel and a two-run home run by Tim Barry, his sixth of the season. Alex Berta added an RBI single in the sixth inning for a 9-0 lead.
After the Muskies chased Walsh with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles posted some insurance, led by another two-run double for Gugel in the top of the eighth. Seth Astroth popped an RBI double of his own in the ninth for the 13-5 victory.
Walsh earned the win going five innings, surrendering just two hits and no earned runs to go with five strikeouts. Berta and Astroth each had three hits and two RBIs. Astroth matched Gugel with two doubles. Cory McCullick wreaked havoc on the basepaths stealing four bases, pushing his Northern Athletics Conference-leading total to 23 in 23 attempts. Freshman Miles Mayer earned his first career save, by pitching the final three innings of the game.
In the second game, the Eagles pounced on Muskie starter Bill Miller right out of the gate, pilling up 16 runs in the first two innings on a six-run first and a 10-run outburst in the second. Barry delivered a two-run single in the first, followed soon after by Mitch Mogensen's two-run double down the left field line. For Mogensen, his hit extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games.
In the second, a three-run triple by Astroth marked the final batter faced for Miller as the Eagles extended their lead. McCullick had a double and a sacrifice fly in the inning, while Berta added an RBI double.
Jimy Landwehr had a phenomenal game, getting a career-high five hits, all singles in his first five at-bats. He had a chance for a sixth hit in the final inning, but struck out swinging to “settle” for a 5-for-6 ball game. Mogensen was almost as good, going 4-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in. Astroth went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in and a double, his team-best 11th double of the season.
Matt Krueger made his season debut after missing the first half of the season with an injury, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and getting three strikeouts. Kyle Smith was awarded his first win of his career for pitching the fourth and fifth inning, while Zach Gura struck three hitters in two perfect innings of work.
Edgewood College (17-6, 8-0 NAC) has little time to rest on Easter Sunday, as they will be back in action the following day with a doubleheader against Marian University. The Eagles and Sabres will get underway at 1:00 p.m. at Herr-Baker Field in Fond du Lac.
