VERONA, Wis. - On a cold and blustery April Fool's Day, the Edgewood College baseball team made quick work of Wisconsin Lutheran College in their Northern Athletics Conference opener at Stampfl Field in Verona. Tim Barry homered in each game and Cory McCullick added a grand slam in the second game as the Eagles swept the Warriors 12-2 and 12-0.
In the first game, it was the Warriors grabbing a 1-0 lead on a bases loaded walk in the third inning. However, the Eagles roared back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Alex Berta singled home McCullick and Steve Binder to give Edgewood College (11-4, 2-0 NAC) the lead, before Seth Astroth delivered a two-run double scoring Berta and Justin Dahmen for a 4-1 Eagles' lead.
McCullick added an RBI double in the fourth before the Eagles blew the game open in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Dahmen rapped an RBI double, setting a massive two-run home run by Barry over the scoreboard in left field. In the seventh, McCullick drove in another run with a single which loaded the bases for Dahmen. Dahmen delivered his fourth hit and third double of the game driving in two runs, and when the Warriors' centerfielder overran the ball it allowed McCullick to score all the way from first to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Rick Walsh earned the complete game victory, allowing just one earned run on six hits. Walsh struck out four Warriors and walked three for his first victory of the season. Dahmen went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three runs batted in. McCullick went 2-for-5 with two RBIs of his own. The top five hitters in the Eagles' line up combined for nine hits and 11 runs batted in.
In the nightcap, Barry got the Eagles off to a great start, following Alex Berta's RBI groundout with a solo home run to straightaway centerfield giving the Eagles a quick 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Astroth and Mitch Mogensen each drove in runs with a pair of singles, setting the stage for McCullick. The senior centerfielder sent a towering fly ball to right field just out of the reach of the Warriors' AJ Paczocha who gave chase before crashing into the outfield fence. McCullick's blast gave the Eagles an 8-0 lead.
Andrew King doubled home Dan Gugel in the bottom of the fifth, followed by an RBI groundout for McCullick. The Eagles capped the scoring in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Alex Elliott and a bloop RBI single from Mitch Mogensen.
Starter Nathan Marlowe picked up his third win of the season, striking out five and allowing just five hits. Marlowe worked out of a jam in the second inning when Wisconsin Lutheran (3-12, 0-4 NAC) loaded the bases with nobody out. However, Marlowe struck out Eric Burrow and then coaxed Shawn Glasel into a ground ball back to the mound, which Marlowe turned into a home to first double play. Freshman Glenn Nowell pitched the final two innings to complete the combined shutout. Nowell fielded five of his six outs personally with four assists and a putout.
The Eagles will be back in action at Stampfl Field on Friday afternoon when they host Maranatha Baptist for a doubleheader. The Eagles and Crusaders will get underway at 3:00 p.m.
