BABSON PARK, Fla. - The Edgewood College baseball team had to work overtime in both halves of a doubleheader with St. Norbert College and escaped with a split. The Eagles won the first game 4-1 in eight innings behind a complete game effort from Scott Winters. In game two, the Eagles rallied for two tying runs in the bottom of the seventh, before falling 4-3 in nine innings.

Winters gave up his only run of the game in the first inning, before shutting down the Green Knights for the rest of the game. He retired the final seven batters of the game in order to secure his first career win as an Eagle. Winters allowed only five hits, struck out five and walked just one.

The Eagles tied the game in the fourth inning when a Matt Werner sacrifice fly scored Seth Astroth who had reached on an error. The game remained knotted until the eighth inning when Dan Gugel led off with a double. A pair of groundouts left Gugel on third with two outs, but freshman Ryan Walker came through with an RBI single to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Cory McCullick then doubled, scoring Walker, and Steve Binder followed with an RBI single for the final margin of victory.

McCullick and Binder each went 3-for-4, with McCullick adding a double and a pair of stolen bases. Binder also had a stolen base. The Eagles had nine hits off Green Knight starter Trevin Hillesheim and eventual losing pitcher Jordan Vater.

The Eagles took the first lead in game two, giving starting pitcher Kyle Lode a 1-0 lead on a Jimy Landwehr sacrifice fly in the third inning. However, St. Norbert responded in the fourth, scoring three runs sparked by a home run from Jared Yost. Facing their last at-bat in the seventh, the Eagles got back-to-back one-out singles from Astroth and Gugel followed by Green Knight fielding error, scoring Astroth and cutting the lead to 3-2. Landwehr then delivered again, with an RBI double tying the game, but St. Norbert starter Bryan Stoppenbach coaxed McCullick into an inning ending ground ball to send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the ninth, St. Norbert College's Jordan Powers was hit by a pitch and eventually scored the winning run on an RBI single from Tony Jadron. The Eagles went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

Nathan Marlowe was saddled with the loss for the Eagles, despite giving up just one run and three hits in two innings of work. Lode had a strong outing going six and one-third innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out three.

Edgewood College will have the next two days off, before completing their Florida trip with a single game against Ramapo College on Thursday, and a doubleheader with Greenville College on Friday.
